HRIS eNewsletter

July 2012, Issue 22

Welcome to the last edition of our eNewsletter. In this, you can find out about the work we've been doing over the past few months and about our future.

Health Rights Information Scotland is on the move!

On 1 August 2012 we will become part of NHS 24’s Health Information Services Team and be based at the NHS 24 Contact Centre.

From that date, you will be able to contact HRIS:

  • by post to Health Information Services, NHS 24, Golden Jubilee National Hospital, Beardmore Street, Clydebank G81 4HX
  • by phoning 07917 084 090
  • by emailing nhs.inform@nhs24.scot.nhs.uk
The move will not affect our current work plan. HRIS and the Scottish Government’s Health and Social Care Directorates are fully committed to this. Much of our efforts right now are around the development of The Charter of Patient Rights and Responsibilities and supporting information. This will remain our top priority.

The Charter of Patient Rights and Responsibilities

HRIS have continued to work with the Scottish Government on the development of The Charter of Patient Rights and Responsibilities and supporting information. The Charter is a requirement of the Patient Rights (Scotland) Act 2011 and must be published by 1 October 2012. The intention is for the supporting information to be available by this date.

The Scottish Government completed a formal public consultation of the draft Charter on 25 June 2012 , and are now in the process of analysing the responses. On conclusion of the analysis, HRIS will work with the Scottish Government to incorporate this into the final draft of The Charter.

The draft supporting information is currently being user-tested. We have appointed The Research Shop to carry out this work which will be completed by 17 August 2012. The user-testing has involved members of the public and staff from both the voluntary sector and the NHS who have a role in supporting patients who use NHS services.

Children and young people's version of The Charter

HRIS have been working with The Scottish Government and key stakeholders to develop information on how the rights described in the Charter of Patient Rights and Responsibilities apply to children and young people under the age of 18.  The aim is to publish a version of the Charter specifically for this age group.

This version of the Charter will also be for anyone who needs to know about the health rights of people who are under 18 - for example, parents, carers and health workers.

In June 2012 we brought together stakeholders to advise on the direction of this work. We are also currently working on a draft factsheet and are considering other formats in which this information can be made available.

For more information about this work, contact the team.

Giving feedback or making a complaint

We have now completed version 5 of the national leaflet on making a complaint about the NHS. This revision reflects revised Scottish Government guidance and also includes information about how to give feedback to the NHS. The title of the leaflet is now Giving feedback or making a complaint about the NHS. We have also revised the fourteen local board versions of the leaflet to take into account changes in contact details.

The revised information is currently available From the Patient information section in the following formats: A5 leaflet, A4 downloadable factsheet, audio (English), easy to read and large print. Over the coming weeks we will publish a BSL version and dual translations in Arabic, Bengali, Chinese, French, Hindi, Lithuanian, Polish, Russian, Spanish and Urdu.
