The outcome
This information is designed to complement the core leaflets that we produce, so we felt it may be unrealistic to expect health boards to prioritise funding a print run in their area. The focus groups with young people also confirmed the need to make this information available in non-NHS youth services. Therefore Health Rights Information Scotland funded a print run to launch the leaflet and distributed it to around 50 sites across Scotland including NHS boards, local authorities and third sector organisations. Around 220,000 leaflets were distributed in September 2009.
Our normal policy is to produce our core information in several languages and alternative formats to increase accessibility. For our young people’s information, we have been unable to prove enough of a demand for these formats to make this approach cost effective. We have therefore included an email address on the back of the leaflet which encourages young people, their parents or guardians, or service providers to request information in alternative formats when needed. We plan to monitor this approach to see if it is a suitable way to address the information needs of young people.
